Self Care for your new scar

As scars mature, they can become hard and raised, adhering to underlying tissue or muscle. To promote scar healing, I suggest that you massage the scar using moderate pressure and a slow, circular motion with your fingertips. This technique helps in achieving a flatter and softer scar as it matures.

To aid in lubrication during the massage and nourish the scar and surrounding skin, I recommended that you use a vitamin E oil or balm with no perfume or chemicals as part of your scar management routine. Vitamin E is easily absorbed by the skin and acts as a nutrient and antioxidant, possessing anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties.

Initially, it may feel strange to touch your scar, but regular massages can help desensitize the area and reduce sensitivity over time. Following a consistent scar management, routine not only assists in scar healing and increased flexibility but also stimulates the production of new collagen, resulting in stronger and smoother scars in the long run.

With the summer sun, inviting you outside it is important to limit sun exposure to your scars, especially during the first 3-6 months after surgery. Premature exposure to sunlight increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and thickening of the scar. The new skin or scar is more susceptible to UV radiation, making it prone to sunburn and potential discoloration. To protect scars from sunburn, cover them with clothing whenever possible and limit direct exposure. When exposed, it is crucial to apply SPF30+ sunscreen, preferably with zinc oxide, to all uncovered skin. Taking care of the scar and shielding it from harmful, UV light will contribute to a smoother, flatter, and less noticeable scar.
