Scars are an important part of the healing process, and properly healed scars should exhibit certain characteristics. Here are some key points to know about scars. Properly healed scars should not be painful and should have a normal color. They should also be soft, flat, flexible, and move with the surrounding skin. [1] Abnormal scars, on the other hand, can show various characteristics such as being thick, rough, lumpy, dimpled, or puckered. They may also be less flexible and mobile than healthy skin, and can appear paler or redder than the surrounding skin. [1] Scarring can be influenced by different factors, including systemic inflammation, poor wound healing due to infection, genetics (keloids can run in certain families), the depth and size of the wound, the amount of tissue lost or removed, pre-existing health conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart, kidney, liver issues), age, stress, smoking, and excessive tension or rubbing of the scar before it has fully healed. Self Care for your new scar

As scars mature, they can become hard and raised, adhering to underlying tissue or muscle. To promote  scar healing, I suggest that you massage the scar using moderate pressure and a slow, circular motion  with your fingertips. This technique helps in achieving a flatter and softer scar as it matures. To aid in lubrication during the massage and nourish the scar and surrounding skin, I recommended  that you use a vitamin E oil or balm with no perfume or chemicals as part of your scar management  routine.  Vitamin E is easily absorbed by the skin and acts as a nutrient and antioxidant, possessing anti- inflammatory and skin-healing properties. Initially, it may feel strange to touch your scar, but regular massages can help  desensitize the area and reduce sensitivity over time.
